Bruno Guimarães has delivered a brutally honest assessment of Newcastle United’s campaign, labelling it the worst since his arrival at the club.
Speaking to ESPN Brazil after the Magpies’ narrow defeat to Arsenal, the Brazilian midfielder did not hold back, pointing to complacency within the squad as a key factor behind their disappointing season.
“Without a doubt, this has been the worst season since I’ve been here,” Guimarães admitted. “We have done great things for the club recently… but overall, we got a little complacent. It’s not a good season.”
The Newcastle captain was making his first start since suffering an injury in February during a victory over Tottenham Hotspur, and his return was immediately felt in midfield. Alongside Sandro Tonali, Guimarães helped Newcastle regain control in the centre of the pitch, producing one of their most balanced performances in recent weeks.
Despite that improvement, the result did not follow. Newcastle created several promising opportunities but failed to convert, a recurring issue that has plagued their campaign. In contrast, Arsenal proved clinical, with Eberechi Eze netting what turned out to be the decisive goal from the visitors’ only major chance.
Guimarães’ comments reflect a growing frustration within the squad, especially given the rapid progress the club has made in recent years. Since the 2022 takeover, Newcastle have risen from relegation candidates to trophy winners and regular European contenders, including multiple appearances in the Champions League.
However, this season has marked a clear regression, with inconsistency, injuries, and lapses in focus undermining their ambitions.
The midfielder’s candid remarks may serve as a wake-up call as Newcastle look to salvage pride in the closing stages of the campaign. With their captain back fit and leading from the front, there is hope that the Magpies can at least finish the season on a stronger note—even if it falls short of the standards they have set in recent years.
