Blackburn Rovers boss Michael O’Neill launched a scathing assessment of Derby County’s style of play following his side’s 3–0 defeat at Pride Park, openly criticising the tactical approach of Rams head coach John Eustace.

Despite the heavy loss, O’Neill insisted the result did not reflect what he believed about the game’s pattern, arguing that Derby’s direct and physical style disrupted any chance of fluid football.

“I don’t like their pattern of playing,” O’Neill said bluntly after the match. “That is why I rejected Derby’s offer when they came to hire me as their coach.”

The Blackburn manager revealed he had previously turned down an approach from Derby due to differences in football philosophy, suggesting the Rams’ approach does not align with his own vision of the game.

“Too much foul,” he added. “We deserved to win today, but Derby made the game tense. It was kick and follow football. This kind of pattern always makes games end in a draw or defeat.”

Blackburn struggled to establish control throughout the contest, with Derby capitalising on key moments to secure a commanding 3–0 victory in front of their home crowd at Pride Park Stadium.

O’Neill repeatedly pointed to what he saw as excessive fouling and a stop-start tempo that broke up the flow of the game.

“There was too much foul from them,” he stressed.

For Derby and Eustace, however, the performance delivered exactly what was required — another massive three points and a statement victory on home soil. While Blackburn left frustrated and their manager outspoken in defeat, Derby celebrated a dominant display that strengthened their campaign.

The debate over style may continue, but at Pride Park, the scoreboard told the only story that mattered.
