A man has been arrested following allegations of racist abuse directed at a Sunderland AFC player during last month’s heated Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.

The fixture between Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC was temporarily halted after claims that defender Lutsharel Geertruida was subjected to racist abuse from within the crowd.

Match official Anthony Taylor paused the Premier League clash for approximately three minutes early in the second half, adhering to the competition’s strict anti-discrimination protocol. The decision came shortly after the incident was reported on the pitch.

According to Northumbria Police, a 45-year-old man from the Gateshead area was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He has since been released on police bail while investigations continue.

The incident occurred in the 52nd minute of the match on 22 March, during a stoppage in play when Newcastle defender Sven Botman was receiving medical attention.

At that point, Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka approached the referee to raise concerns about the alleged abuse.

Both clubs are understood to be cooperating fully with authorities, while football officials continue to stress a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination within the sport.

The investigation remains ongoing.
