Everton Close In on £25m Hayden Hackney as Middlesbrough Prepare for Midfield Exit
Everton are reportedly closing in on the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney in a deal worth around £25 million, with the Championship club now appearing resigned to losing one of their most prized academy graduates.

Hackney has been the subject of significant transfer interest throughout the summer following Middlesbrough’s heartbreaking Championship play-off final defeat. After another impressive campaign in the second tier, the 24-year-old has emerged as one of England’s most sought-after midfielders.
Named the Championship Player of the Season, Hackney established himself as the driving force behind Middlesbrough’s promotion push, combining composure in possession, defensive intelligence, and creativity from midfield. His performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.
Everton and Crystal Palace were both understood to have tested Middlesbrough’s resolve earlier in the transfer window, but their initial offers were rejected as Boro insisted on a valuation of approximately £25 million.
Now, however, Everton appear to be making decisive progress in negotiations.
The Toffees are looking to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new Premier League campaign and view Hackney as a long-term investment capable of becoming a key figure at Goodison Park. His ability to dictate play while contributing defensively has made him one of the club’s priority targets.

For Middlesbrough, losing Hackney would represent the end of an era. A product of the club’s academy, he has developed into one of the Championship’s standout performers and has become a fan favourite during his rise through the ranks.
Although the Teesside club were determined not to sell below their asking price, reports suggest Everton are now prepared to meet the valuation, paving the way for a breakthrough in talks.
Crystal Palace have also admired the midfielder throughout the summer, but Everton currently appear to have moved into pole position to secure his signature.
Should the transfer be completed, Hackney would become one of Everton’s marquee additions of the summer and underline the club’s intent to rebuild with young, high-potential talent capable of making an immediate impact in the Premier League.
An official agreement has yet to be confirmed, but all indications suggest the £25 million move is edging closer, with Hackney seemingly set to swap the Riverside Stadium for Merseyside in the coming weeks.
