Derby County have wasted little time in the January transfer window, completing two signings already, with head coach John Eustace confirming that further additions are actively being worked on following the departure of Curtis Nelson.
The Rams entered the winter window knowing reinforcements would be required, and Eustace has moved quickly to strengthen his squad as the second half of the season approaches. While the club has not stood still in the market, the exit of Nelson has added fresh urgency to Derby’s plans, particularly in defensive areas.
Nelson, 32, has left Pride Park after two-and-a-half years with the club, bringing an end to a spell that included both commanding performances and frustrating injury setbacks. The experienced centre-back was a key figure during his time at Derby, valued for his leadership and physical presence at the heart of the defence. However, his final year was severely disrupted by a serious knee injury, limiting his impact on the pitch and ultimately paving the way for his departure this month.

Speaking after confirming the defender’s exit, Eustace paid tribute to Nelson’s professionalism and influence within the dressing room, while making it clear that the club is already planning the next steps.
“Curtis has been a fantastic servant to the club and everyone wishes him well,” Eustace said. “At the same time, we’re always looking forward. We’ve brought in two players already and there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes to add more quality and balance to the squad.”
Derby’s early activity in the window signals clear intent from the new head coach, who is keen to put his own stamp on the group as the Rams push on with their league campaign. The loss of Nelson leaves a gap in experience at the back, but the club is understood to be targeting both defensive cover and competition across multiple positions.
