FURY IN BAKU: GURBAN GURBANOV ERUPTS AFTER 6–1 HUMILIATION, DEMANDS BAN ON NEWCASTLE FANS
Tensions flared in Baku on Thursday night as Qarabag head coach Gurban Gurbanov launched an explosive rant following his side’s humiliating 6–1 home defeat to Newcastle United.
The Azerbaijani champions were dismantled on their own turf in a one-sided encounter that saw the visitors dominate from start to finish. Defensive lapses and clinical finishing turned what was expected to be a competitive European clash into a nightmare evening for the home side.
But it was not only the heavy scoreline that angered Gurbanov.
In a furious post-match press conference, the Qarabag boss turned his attention to the travelling supporters.
“I f***ing hate Newcastle,” Gurbanov fumed.
“How can their fans chant such things in our stadium? They thought we don’t understand English.”
Although he did not specify the exact chants that triggered his outburst, Gurbanov insisted the behaviour was disrespectful and unacceptable. He went on to call for European football authorities to take action.
“This is not respect. UEFA need to ban them,” he added.
The defeat leaves Qarabag with significant questions to answer on the pitch after conceding six goals at home, but the controversy surrounding the alleged chanting may now spark further investigation off it.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from Newcastle or European football’s governing body. Meanwhile, the emphatic victory strengthens Newcastle’s position in the competition, while Qarabag are left to regroup after a bruising and controversial night.
