Coventry City close in on record deal to bring Carl Rushworth back to the CBS Arena
Coventry City are edging closer to completing one of the biggest signings in the club’s history, with the Sky Blues confident of securing the permanent return of goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Rushworth enjoyed a hugely successful spell at the CBS Arena during his previous time with Coventry, playing a vital role in the club’s promotion campaign. His commanding presence in the penalty area, outstanding shot-stopping ability and composed distribution quickly made him a fan favourite while earning the complete trust of the coaching staff.
Now back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, Coventry are determined to strengthen their squad with players who can make an immediate impact, and Rushworth has emerged as one of their top priorities.

Manager Frank Lampard is believed to have identified the 23-year-old as his first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Negotiations between Coventry and Brighton have accelerated in recent days, with both clubs reportedly moving closer to reaching an agreement.
Coventry have already tabled a club-record offer worth around £20 million for the England youth international. While Brighton are understood to be holding out for a higher fee, sources close to the discussions suggest a compromise could soon be reached.
A permanent return would be viewed as excellent business by Coventry, bringing back a goalkeeper who is already familiar with the club’s playing style, dressing room and expectations. His experience at the CBS Arena means he would require little time to settle, providing immediate stability in one of the most important positions on the pitch.
If completed, the transfer would represent Coventry’s second major signing of the summer as Lampard continues to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League. With the Sky Blues preparing for life back in the top flight, securing Rushworth’s signature would send another strong statement of intent ahead of the new season.
Supporters will now be hoping the final details can be agreed quickly, allowing one of their promotion heroes to make an emotional return to the Midlands on a long-term deal.
