Chris Davies did not hold back in his assessment after Birmingham City F.C. were beaten 2-1 by Ipswich Town F.C. at Portman Road, with the Blues boss branding a key refereeing decision “scandalous.”
The visitors had taken the lead before Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich side mounted a strong comeback to secure all three points. However, the match was overshadowed by a hugely controversial moment in the second half that ultimately proved decisive.
Birmingham believed they had found a crucial equaliser when Ibrahim Osman delivered a dangerous cross that appeared to deflect off Dara O’Shea and into the net. Celebrations were cut short when the officials ruled the goal out, judging that the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.
Davies was furious with the call after the final whistle, insisting the decision was clearly incorrect.
“It’s scandalous. Everyone close to it could see the ball stayed in play. That decision has cost us the game,” he said bluntly.
Despite his frustration, Davies was keen to highlight the positives from his side’s performance. He praised his players for their intensity and commitment, believing they stood toe-to-toe with one of the division’s strongest teams.
“We matched them and, if anything, created the better chances as the game went on,” he added. “I’m proud of the players because the level of performance was there.”
The Birmingham boss also pointed to the reaction from the travelling supporters at full-time, who applauded the team despite the defeat, as evidence that the display deserved more than it ultimately yielded.
While Ipswich celebrated another important victory in their push at the top end of the table, Birmingham were left to reflect on what might have been — with Davies convinced that a pivotal moment was taken out of their hands.
