Former Sunderland AFC, Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United winger Ian Carlo Poveda has been banned from driving following a court ruling, adding another setback to a career that has struggled to meet early expectations.

The 26-year-old, once regarded as one of the most promising young talents to emerge from elite academies, was handed the punishment after being found guilty of a driving offence earlier this year. Details surrounding the incident have not been fully disclosed, but the ruling sees Poveda temporarily prohibited from getting behind the wheel.

Poveda’s journey in football has been anything but straightforward. Born in London and representing Colombia internationally, he spent his formative years moving between some of Europe’s biggest academies, including Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, Brentford FC and Manchester City.

With such a high-profile development pathway, many expected Poveda to establish himself at the very top of the game. However, his senior career has yet to fully ignite. His only sustained run in the Premier League came during the 2020–21 campaign with Leeds United, where he made 14 appearances after arriving from Manchester City.

Despite later returning to the top flight with Sunderland, Poveda struggled for regular minutes and found himself on the fringes of the squad under head coach Régis Le Bris. His time at the Stadium of Light ultimately came to an end earlier this year.
