Former Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce has launched a fierce defence of Eddie Howe after club legend Alan Shearer questioned whether the current boss will still be in charge next season.
The debate around Howe’s future has intensified following a disappointing Premier League campaign that has seen Newcastle United slump towards the bottom half of the table, losing 15 matches along the way. The downturn marks a sharp contrast to the highs of recent seasons, including ending the club’s 70-year wait for domestic silverware.
Speaking after Newcastle’s latest defeat—ironically away at one of his former clubs—Howe cut a frustrated figure, prompting Shearer to raise doubts about his long-term future at St James’ Park.
“I don’t see him being there next season,” Shearer reportedly said, pointing to the mounting pressure and inconsistency that has plagued the Magpies’ campaign.
However, those comments have not gone down well with Allardyce, who previously managed the club during the 2007–08 season. The veteran coach did not hold back in his response, criticising Shearer for what he sees as a premature and unhelpful assessment.
Allardyce argued that Howe has earned more time and respect given his achievements since arriving from AFC Bournemouth in November 2021. He highlighted the significant progress made under Howe, including Champions League qualification and the club’s resurgence as a competitive force in English football.
“People forget too quickly what he’s done,” Allardyce said. “One tough season and suddenly there are questions about his future. That’s not how you build stability.”
Howe’s tenure has largely been viewed as a success, transforming Newcastle from relegation candidates into European contenders. But injuries, inconsistent performances, and the added demands of competing on multiple fronts have contributed to a challenging campaign this term.
Despite the criticism, there is still a belief among sections of the fanbase that Howe deserves the opportunity to rebuild and respond next season—particularly given the long-term project backed by the club’s ownership.
