Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has ignited fresh debate over VAR decisions after strongly criticising a key moment in West Ham’s clash with Brentford, branding the officiating as “disgraceful” in a heated post-match reaction.

The incident in question came in the 21st minute when West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos powered home a header from a corner delivered by James Ward-Prowse. The effort appeared to clearly cross the line, sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters and players.
However, referee Craig Pawson was advised to halt proceedings following a VAR review. After a lengthy check, the goal was ruled out—reportedly due to a marginal offside or a possible infringement in the build-up—allowing Brentford to maintain their advantage.
The decision immediately drew frustration from the West Ham camp, with emotions boiling over as players struggled to understand the reasoning behind the call.
Speaking live on Sky Sports, Dean did not hold back in his assessment.
“Shame on the referee and VAR,” he said. “They’re just disgraceful bodies against us.”
Dean also backed his own interpretation of the laws, insisting the goal should have stood.
“Spot on from me—this is exactly where VAR is getting it wrong. You need clear and obvious evidence to overturn decisions, and I don’t think that was there.”
His comments quickly went viral, with fans and pundits divided over whether VAR had once again overstepped its intended purpose.
For West Ham, the disallowed goal proved a pivotal moment. Already trailing following an early Brentford strike, the Hammers were denied a crucial equaliser that could have shifted the momentum of the match.
