Middlesbrough Hold Firm on Hayden Hackney Valuation as Everton Interest Intensifies

The future of Hayden Hackney is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about transfer stories in the EFL this summer, with Middlesbrough determined to stand firm amid growing interest from the Premier League.

The 23-year-old midfielder enjoyed a sensational 2025/26 campaign, establishing himself as one of the most influential players in the Championship and earning the division’s prestigious Player of the Year award.

Under the guidance of Kim Hellberg, Middlesbrough became one of the most exciting teams in the league, earning widespread praise for their high-intensity, attacking style of football. At the heart of that success was Hackney, whose creativity, composure and leadership from midfield proved crucial throughout the season.

The academy graduate recorded five goals and seven assists in the Championship, the most productive campaign of his career. His importance to the side became even more evident during the closing stages of the season when a groin injury sidelined him for the final eight matches. During his absence, Middlesbrough’s automatic promotion challenge faded dramatically as they slipped away from the top two positions.

With just one year remaining on his current contract, speculation surrounding Hackney’s future has continued to grow. A move to the Premier League appears increasingly likely, with Everton emerging as the frontrunners in the race for his signature.

However, Middlesbrough are refusing to be pressured into a quick sale. According to reports, the Teesside club are demanding a package worth at least £25 million and are prepared to hold their position despite Hackney’s contractual situation.

The involvement of Everton youngster Harrison Armstrong has also been discussed as negotiations continue. The highly-rated 19-year-old is viewed as one of the brightest prospects at Goodison Park, and his presence in David Moyes’ plans could potentially influence any deal between the two clubs.

Some have suggested that Armstrong could be included as part of a loan arrangement to soften the blow of losing Hackney. However, not everyone connected with Middlesbrough believes that would be enough.

A prominent Middlesbrough fan pundit has expressed concerns over the idea, arguing that while Armstrong possesses significant potential, expecting a teenager to replace the Championship’s Player of the Year would place unfair pressure on the youngster and leave a major void in Boro’s midfield.

The fan believes Hackney’s combination of experience, leadership and proven Championship quality cannot simply be replicated by a loan signing, regardless of Armstrong’s promise.

As the summer transfer window progresses, Middlesbrough supporters are bracing themselves for what appears to be an increasingly difficult battle to keep their star midfielder. Everton remain strongly interested, but with Boro standing firm on their valuation, any deal is likely to require significant investment before one of the Championship’s standout talents makes the step up to the Premier League.

For now, Middlesbrough remain in control of the negotiations, but the Hayden Hackney saga looks set to dominate headlines throughout the summer.
