Derby County Handed Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi Transfer Warning as £3m Deal Faces Doubt
Derby County have been urged to proceed with caution in their pursuit of Nigerian striker Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi, with fresh doubts emerging over a reported £3 million move for the forward.
The Rams are continuing to strengthen John Eustace’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season, but the proposed transfer has now been played down by those familiar with the situation, raising questions over whether the deal will ultimately materialise.
Derby head into the new campaign with renewed optimism after finishing eighth in the Championship last season. Although that position narrowly missed out on a play-off place in 2025/26, the expansion of the Championship play-offs means an identical finish this time around would be enough to secure a shot at promotion back to the Premier League.
Having already completed permanent deals for Bobby Clark following his successful loan spell, while experienced defender Charlie Taylor and attacking midfielder Filip Bilbija arrived on free transfers, Eustace is now keen to add more firepower before the transfer window closes on September 1.
One name heavily linked with Pride Park has been Nigerian striker Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi. Reports suggested Derby were closing in on a deal worth around £3 million, with the powerful forward viewed as a player capable of adding pace, physicality and goals to the Rams’ frontline.
However, those reports have now been met with scepticism.
Speaking about the speculation, one observer admitted they would be surprised if the move went ahead under the reported terms.
“I’d be very shocked,” they said when discussing the possibility of Derby paying around £3 million for the striker.

The comments have cast fresh uncertainty over the transfer, with suggestions that the reported fee may not accurately reflect Derby’s current transfer strategy.
Eustace has generally favoured a measured approach in the market, targeting players who offer value while fitting into the club’s long-term plans. Derby have been careful with their recruitment since returning to Championship stability, balancing ambition with financial discipline.
While the Rams remain eager to strengthen in attack, it appears supporters may have to wait before any deal for Ikwuemesi is finalised.
That has not stopped excitement among fans, many of whom believe another striker is essential if Derby are to mount a serious challenge for promotion. Despite a respectable campaign last season, consistency in front of goal was an area the club sought to improve throughout the summer.
With several weeks still remaining before the transfer deadline, Derby retain plenty of time to reshape their squad. Whether that includes Ikwuemesi remains to be seen.
For now, the Nigerian forward continues to be linked with the Rams, but the latest comments suggest a £3 million agreement may not be as advanced as initially reported.
As Derby prepare for another demanding Championship campaign, Eustace will hope to complete the right additions rather than simply rushing deals through. The club’s objective remains clear: secure a top-eight finish at the very least and take advantage of the expanded play-off format in pursuit of a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
The coming weeks are expected to be decisive, with Derby still active in the transfer market and supporters eagerly awaiting news of who will arrive before the summer window slams shut.
