Sheffield United could be dealt another major setback ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season, with reports suggesting West Ham United are preparing an ambitious move for Nottingham Forest midfielder James McAtee.
The Blades have already endured a difficult period both on and off the pitch. Last summer saw the departures of Anel Ahmedhodzic, Vinicius Souza and Kieffer Moore, while Andre Brooks has also left this summer. Meanwhile, highly-rated youngster Sydie Peck continues to attract strong interest from both West Ham and Brentford.

Last season proved challenging for Sheffield United after beginning the campaign with a points deduction. The penalty contributed to a poor start under Ruben Selles before Chris Wilder returned to steady the ship and guide the club away from a relegation battle, just a year after reaching the Championship play-off final.
Off-field concerns have only added to supporters’ frustration. Club owners COH Sports are currently facing a winding-up petition over alleged unpaid payments related to their takeover of the club from Prince Abdullah in December 2024.
West Ham’s interest in left-back Harrison Burrows has also been well documented, but the Hammers’ reported pursuit of McAtee could prove an even bigger disappointment for Blades fans.
McAtee enjoyed a successful loan spell at Bramall Lane earlier in his career and remains a popular figure among Sheffield United supporters. Many had hoped the club could one day bring him back permanently, but those hopes may now be fading if West Ham succeed in convincing the Nottingham Forest midfielder to move to the London Stadium.
If the Hammers complete the deal, it would represent yet another blow for Sheffield United as they continue to rebuild ahead of what promises to be another demanding Championship campaign.
