Kris Boyd Goes Viral as He Tears Into Frank Lampard’s Coventry Recruitment: “They’re Getting It Completely Wrong”
Former Rangers striker and Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd has sparked fierce debate after delivering a scathing assessment of Frank Lampard’s summer recruitment at Coventry City, claiming the Sky Blues are “getting it completely wrong” in the transfer market.
Speaking during a football discussion, Boyd questioned the club’s transfer strategy ahead of their return to the Premier League, warning that Coventry could find themselves in serious trouble if they fail to strengthen the right areas before the new season begins.
“Frank Lampard is getting this Coventry squad completely wrong this summer. They’re wasting money chasing overpriced players when they should be strengthening the spine of the team. If they carry on like this, they’ll be in a relegation scrap by Christmas — and Lampard will only have himself to blame.”
The outspoken comments quickly spread across social media, with fans from across the football world weighing in. Many Coventry supporters were furious with Boyd’s assessment, accusing him of overlooking the quality already within the squad and dismissing the ambition shown by the club in the transfer market.
Others, however, admitted the former Scotland international had highlighted concerns that some supporters have privately shared throughout the summer.
Boyd believes Coventry’s recruitment has focused too heavily on exciting attacking additions while neglecting the defensive foundation required to survive in the Premier League.
The Sky Blues have already secured moves for talented winger Loum Tchaouna and defender Aurèle Amenda, while continuing their pursuit of goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. Although all three players are highly regarded, Boyd argues they do not fully address what he believes are Coventry’s biggest weaknesses.
“You can sign flashy attackers all you want, but if the foundation isn’t solid, you’re going to get found out,” Boyd continued.

“Lampard knows what it takes to compete at this level. That’s what makes this more frustrating. He should be building a side that can dig in and grind out results, not just one that looks good on paper.”
Lampard has repeatedly spoken about creating a squad capable of establishing itself in the Premier League following Coventry’s promotion, insisting that the club must recruit players with both quality and the right mentality.
Despite Boyd’s criticism, Coventry’s hierarchy remain confident in their recruitment strategy, believing the club is assembling a balanced squad capable of competing against England’s top sides. The transfer window is still open, leaving plenty of time for further arrivals that could strengthen key positions.
Supporters are also divided over Boyd’s remarks. While some believe his comments underestimate Lampard’s vision and the club’s long-term planning, others feel Coventry still require experienced Premier League players, particularly in central defence and midfield, if they are to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
With several weeks remaining before the transfer deadline, Lampard now has the opportunity to silence his critics. Whether Boyd’s warning proves prophetic or becomes another controversial pundit’s prediction will only become clear once the Premier League campaign gets underway.
