HUGE BLOW FOR CELTIC AHEAD OF ST MIRREN CLASH AS SAINTS RECEIVE MAJOR INJURY BOOST

Celtic have been handed a potentially difficult setback ahead of their Scottish Premiership meeting with St Mirren, with the Paisley side receiving encouraging news on the injury front just hours before the two teams meet.

The reigning champions travel to face a St Mirren side that has made an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign. The Saints currently sit near the top of the table, making Saturday night’s encounter a much more demanding test for Martin O’Neill’s team than the league standings might initially suggest.

Celtic come into the fixture with confidence after their recent 3-0 victory over Aberdeen, a result that strengthened their position at the top of the Premiership. Camilo Durán, Benjamin Nygren and Hyun-Jun Yang were all on target in that convincing win, while several of Celtic’s new arrivals were given valuable minutes.

However, the trip to Paisley represents a completely different challenge.

St Mirren have shown plenty of attacking threat and resilience during the opening weeks of the campaign, and their squad has been strengthened during the summer transfer window. Their strong start means Celtic cannot afford to approach the fixture expecting another straightforward victory.

The biggest concern for Celtic is that St Mirren are now beginning to recover players who had previously been unavailable. Any boost to Craig McLeish’s squad could make an already difficult fixture considerably tougher for O’Neill.

The Saints have won six of their nine matches in all competitions this season, alongside one draw and two defeats. That record underlines why Celtic will need to be at their best from the opening whistle.

For Celtic, the objective is simple: maintain their early-season momentum.

O’Neill has already overseen a squad that has undergone considerable change, with several new players arriving late in the transfer window. The 3-0 win over Aberdeen demonstrated the depth available to the Celtic manager, but Saturday’s match will test that depth again.

The timing of the St Mirren game also adds pressure. With Celtic sitting top and St Mirren among the leading challengers, dropping points could allow their rivals to close the gap.

St Mirren, meanwhile, will believe they have a genuine opportunity to cause an upset.

Playing at home should give the Saints additional confidence, while their recent form suggests they are not simply looking to contain Celtic. Their performances this season indicate a team willing to compete and attack when opportunities arise.

Celtic’s defensive organisation will therefore be crucial.

The champions cannot afford sloppy possession or defensive mistakes against a St Mirren side that has already demonstrated its ability to punish opponents. O’Neill will expect his players to control the tempo and avoid allowing the home team to grow into the contest.

There is also the psychological element.

Celtic know they are expected to win almost every domestic fixture, particularly after another title-winning campaign. St Mirren have considerably less pressure on their shoulders and can play with the freedom that comes from being among the early pace-setters.

That makes the injury developments particularly significant.

A player returning from injury can provide more than just another body in the squad. It can change the manager’s tactical options, strengthen the bench and give teammates additional confidence.

Celtic therefore face a St Mirren team that could be considerably stronger than the one supporters might have expected a few weeks ago.

The Saints’ official website confirms that Celtic are due to visit the Marbill Coaches Stadium on Saturday, September 5, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm.

For O’Neill, the challenge will be finding the right balance between maintaining winning momentum and managing his squad effectively.

Celtic have already shown that they possess enough quality to hurt teams from different areas of the pitch. Their victory over Aberdeen was particularly encouraging because the goals came from different players, while new signings also continued to settle into the side.

But St Mirren will not be intimidated.

The home side’s strong opening to the campaign has created belief around the club, and facing the champions in front of their own supporters provides an ideal opportunity to make an early statement.

Celtic’s supporters will therefore be hoping that the injury situation does not become a decisive factor.

The champions remain favourites on paper, but football rarely follows the script. With St Mirren receiving a timely boost and Celtic facing another demanding domestic test, O’Neill’s side will need concentration, intensity and quality throughout the 90 minutes.

One thing is certain: this is unlikely to be an easy night for Celtic.

The champions have started the season strongly, but St Mirren have shown enough to suggest they can make Celtic work for every point. With the Saints strengthened by positive injury developments, Celtic’s squad depth could once again be tested.

And if Celtic fail to match St Mirren’s intensity from the start, the home side will be ready to take advantage.
