Harry Kane has revealed the conversation he had with Jude Bellingham immediately after missing his penalty against Spain as England suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat at Wembley.

Kane had the opportunity to give England a crucial moment in the match, but his penalty went wrong.

Explaining what happened, the England captain said he felt a slight sprain in his knee just before taking the kick and then accidentally stood on his shoelace as he stepped forward.

“It sounds strange saying it now, but it affected my balance,” Kane explained. “I didn’t connect with the ball the way I wanted to.”

Kane admitted that he immediately knew he had failed to take the penalty properly.

“I looked up and Jude was already coming towards me,” he said.

According to Kane, Bellingham’s first reaction was a mixture of surprise and humour.

“He said, ‘Harry, what was that?’”

Kane replied: “I stood on my shoelace.”

Bellingham then joked: “Well, maybe now you’ve missed one, I can take the next one.”

Kane smiled but insisted he was not giving up penalty duties.

“I told him, ‘You know I’m still taking the next one.’”

Bellingham laughed and responded: “You did miss, my friend. I’m taking the next one.”

For Kane, however, the exchange was more than just banter. He believes Bellingham was trying to help him immediately move past the disappointment.

“That’s just the relationship we have,” Kane said. “There’s banter, but underneath it, he was trying to lift me straight away.”

Despite explaining the circumstances surrounding the penalty, Kane refused to use them as an excuse.

“But honestly, there’s no excuse. I should have scored.”

The striker acknowledged that against a team as strong as Spain, England could not afford to waste important opportunities.

“They’re the type of team where you might only get a few clear opportunities, and when they come, you have to make them count.”

Kane also admitted that the outcome could have been different had he converted.

“Maybe if I score, the game is different. Maybe we win. Maybe the whole conversation after the match is completely different.”

But he knows there is no way to change what happened.

“You don’t get to go back and take the penalty again because you don’t like what happened. You have to accept it.”

The England captain ultimately took full responsibility.

“I had an opportunity to help the team. I didn’t.”

Kane has taken numerous penalties throughout his career and expects himself to deliver when England need him most.

“That’s probably the hardest part for me because I’ve taken a lot of penalties in my career, and I expect myself to score those.”

Bellingham’s immediate support, however, gave Kane a moment to reset.

“You don’t need everyone looking at you like you’ve just destroyed the game,” Kane explained. “You need someone to say, ‘Forget it. Next one.’ And that’s what Jude did.”

England eventually lost 3-2 to Spain, leaving Kane and his teammates to reflect on a painful night at Wembley.

For Kane, there was no attempt to hide from the mistake.

“Ultimately, the responsibility is mine.”

He knows the penalty could have changed the match, but he also knows football does not offer second chances.

“Tonight, I had my chance, I missed it, and I have to own that.”

And while Bellingham may have jokingly demanded the next penalty, Kane’s message was clear: when the next opportunity comes, he still expects to be the one taking it.
