‘I Broke Down’ Patrick Agyemang Reveals Honest Derby County Truth After World Cup Heartache
Derby County striker Patrick Agyemang has opened up on the emotional toll of missing out on the United States squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting he “broke down” after learning he would not be part of Mauricio Pochettino’s final selection.
The 25-year-old forward, who joined Derby County from Charlotte FC last summer in a deal reportedly worth an initial £7.3 million, had been widely expected to play a role for the USMNT on home soil following an impressive rise in recent years.
Agyemang’s move to Pride Park came amid interest from several Premier League clubs after a prolific spell in Major League Soccer. However, a frustrating injury setback during the campaign ultimately derailed his hopes of representing his country at football’s biggest tournament.
Speaking candidly ahead of the World Cup, Agyemang revealed the devastating impact of the news.
“When I got the call, I broke down. It’s every footballer’s dream to play in a World Cup, especially one being hosted in your own country. It was incredibly difficult to accept,” he admitted.

The striker explained that the injury not only affected him physically but also mentally as he watched his international ambitions slip away.
“There were moments when I questioned everything. I worked so hard to get myself into contention, and then circumstances outside of my control changed everything. It was heartbreaking.”💔
Despite the disappointment, Agyemang insists Derby County played a major role in helping him navigate one of the toughest periods of his career.
“The support from Derby was unbelievable. The staff, my teammates and the fans stood by me throughout my recovery. They reminded me that this setback doesn’t define my career.”
The Rams striker remains determined to use the frustration as motivation heading into the 2026/27 Championship season.
“Of course it hurts, and it will probably hurt for a long time. But football gives you opportunities to respond. My focus now is getting fully fit, helping Derby achieve their goals and making sure I’m ready when the next chance comes.”
Agyemang’s absence is a significant blow for the United States, who will begin their World Cup campaign under the spotlight of hosting the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico.

The expanded 48-team competition is expected to attract record audiences, with the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
For Derby County supporters, however, the forward’s determination to bounce back could prove to be a major boost. While his World Cup dream has been postponed, Agyemang remains focused on proving why the Rams invested heavily in his potential.
After months of injury frustration and international disappointment, the striker’s message is clear: this setback is only the beginning of his comeback story.
