REPLAY CALL: More Than 80,000 Argentina Fans Sign Petition Urging FIFA to Replay 2026 World Cup Final

More than 80,000 Argentina supporters have signed an online petition calling on FIFA to replay the 2026 FIFA World Cup final after their nation’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain. The campaign has rapidly gained traction on social media, reigniting debate over the officiating during one of the biggest matches in world football.

The petition, which was launched on Change.org shortly after the final, claims that several controversial refereeing decisions had a decisive impact on the outcome of the match. At the centre of the complaints is the dismissal of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández, who received a second yellow card during the contest, leaving the defending champions to finish the match with ten players.

Many supporters believe the sending-off changed the course of the final, arguing that Argentina’s task became significantly more difficult after Fernández’s dismissal. The petition also points to several incidents that have circulated widely on social media, with fans claiming that video clips show decisions that consistently favoured Spain throughout the match.

However, despite the widespread online discussion, no verified evidence has been presented to prove that the match officials intentionally influenced the outcome of the final. Likewise, there is currently no legal or sporting provision within FIFA’s regulations that would allow a World Cup final to be replayed based solely on disputed refereeing decisions.

The petition nevertheless insists that the issues raised deserve serious attention from football’s governing body.

Part of the statement reads:

“This is not just a matter of justice for Argentina, but for the future of world football. We need to guarantee the integrity of referees at all levels of the sport.”

The organisers argue that the controversy extends beyond a single match and raises broader questions about confidence in football officiating. They claim that transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining trust in the sport’s biggest competitions.

The petition goes on to make a direct appeal to FIFA, urging the organisation to examine the disputed incidents thoroughly.

It states:

“Review these incidents with seriousness and transparency, and to consider replaying the final, this time without the influence of a corrupt referee… so that the result truly reflects the merit of the teams involved.”

The campaign concludes with a rallying call to football supporters around the world, encouraging fans to add their signatures in support of what organisers describe as a fight for fairness.

Its final message reads:

“Sign this petition to show that fans will not tolerate corruption in football and that we demand a clean game.”

While the petition has attracted tens of thousands of signatures in a short period, sports governance experts note that online petitions carry no official authority over FIFA decisions. Historically, FIFA has only considered replaying matches in extremely rare circumstances involving administrative errors or proven breaches of competition regulations, rather than disagreements over refereeing judgments.

Refereeing decisions, including yellow cards, red cards, penalties and offside calls, are generally regarded as final once a match has concluded, except in cases involving mistaken player identity for disciplinary sanctions. Even the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) does not create grounds for replaying a completed fixture if supporters disagree with the decisions made during the game.

Spain’s victory secured the country’s latest World Cup triumph after a fiercely contested final in which both teams created opportunities before the decisive goal separated them. Argentina, meanwhile, were left to reflect on a painful defeat as their hopes of retaining the World Cup came to an end.

The final has continued to generate intense debate across television, radio and social media, with supporters from both nations passionately defending their respective viewpoints. While many Argentina fans remain convinced that key moments went against their team, others have argued that controversial decisions are an unavoidable part of football and that the result should stand.

As of now, FIFA has not announced any plans to investigate the petition or reconsider the outcome of the World Cup final. Unless compelling new evidence emerges demonstrating a breach of the Laws of the Game or FIFA competition regulations, the result is expected to remain unchanged.

For now, the petition serves primarily as a reflection of the frustration felt by many Argentina supporters following their narrow defeat. Although it has become one of the most talked-about football campaigns online, it does not alter the official outcome of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with Spain remaining the recognised world champions under FIFA’s current regulations.
