Brighton Ready New Deal for Veteran Defender as Ajax Return Rumours Intensify

Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly keen to secure the future of experienced defender Joël Veltman despite growing speculation that the Dutch international could be on the verge of a return to former club Ajax this summer.

The 34-year-old has been a reliable figure for the Seagulls since arriving at the Amex Stadium in 2020 after spending the majority of his professional career with Ajax. During his time in England, Veltman has established himself as a versatile and dependable member of Brighton’s squad, featuring in multiple defensive roles under different managers.

Recent reports suggest Brighton have moved to reward the defender’s contributions by presenting him with a significant contract offer. The club are understood to be pleased with his performances throughout the 2025/26 campaign and are eager to retain his services as they prepare for another season of European football.

Under manager Fabian Hürzeler, Veltman was primarily deployed at right-back but also filled in across the defensive line whenever required. His versatility proved valuable as Brighton navigated a demanding campaign that ultimately ended with qualification for the UEFA Conference League.

The Dutch veteran featured in 28 matches across all competitions, accumulating 1,360 minutes of playing time and playing an important role in the Seagulls’ push for European qualification. His experience and leadership have been viewed as key assets within Hürzeler’s squad.

Despite the positive contract talks, uncertainty remains over Veltman’s long-term future. Ajax have repeatedly been linked with a move for their former captain in recent transfer windows, and the defender has never completely ruled out the possibility of returning to Amsterdam before the end of his playing career.

Those comments, combined with Ajax’s continued interest, have fuelled speculation that a summer departure could still materialise even as Brighton attempt to tie him down to fresh terms.

For Brighton, retaining Veltman would represent another important piece of business ahead of a season that will include European commitments. His tactical flexibility, experience at the highest level, and familiarity with the demands of both domestic and continental competition make him a valuable option for Hürzeler.

However, with Ajax reportedly monitoring the situation closely and the player maintaining a strong emotional connection to his boyhood club, the coming weeks could prove decisive. Brighton may have placed a serious offer on the table, but whether that will be enough to keep Veltman at the Amex remains one of the intriguing storylines of the summer transfer window.
