Erling Haaland Reacts as Sondre Langas Returns to Derby County, Sparking Dion Sanderson’s Playful Transfer Plea

Derby County defender Sondre Langas has returned to Pride Park after an unforgettable summer with Norway at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Scandinavian nation enjoyed the best major tournament campaign in its history.

Norway, widely regarded as one of the brightest emerging teams in international football, reached the World Cup quarter-finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico, surpassing all previous achievements on the global stage. It was only the fourth World Cup appearance in the country’s history, but Ståle Solbakken’s side captured the imagination of supporters with a series of impressive displays.

Their remarkable journey eventually came to an end against England in the last eight. Norway stunned the Three Lions by taking the lead before Jude Bellingham inspired a dramatic comeback with two goals, sending England into the semi-finals. England would later see their own hopes dashed after suffering defeat to Argentina.

Although Langas played a limited role during the tournament, the Derby centre-back still gained invaluable experience on football’s biggest stage. His only appearance came as a second-half substitute in Norway’s final group-stage match against France after qualification for the knockout rounds had already been secured thanks to victories over Iraq and Senegal.

Despite his lack of minutes, Langas was very much part of the close-knit Norwegian squad throughout the tournament. The players became popular figures among supporters, regularly celebrating victories with the now-famous Viking Row and building a strong bond as they travelled together across North America.

Now back in Derby, Langas has immediately turned his attention to preparing for the new Championship campaign under John Eustace, with the Rams hoping to build on an encouraging summer of recruitment.

His return also attracted attention on social media after fellow Derby defender Dion Sanderson spotted a post celebrating Langas’ arrival back at the club. Sanderson jokingly tagged Norway superstar Erling Haaland in the comments, inviting the Manchester City striker to “come and join Derby.”

The light-hearted message quickly caught the attention of fans, especially after Haaland reacted to content surrounding Langas’ return, prompting plenty of amusement among Derby supporters.

While there is, of course, no realistic prospect of Haaland swapping the Premier League for the Championship, Sanderson’s playful comment highlighted the strong camaraderie within the Norwegian camp and the excitement surrounding Langas’ return.

For Derby supporters, having a World Cup quarter-finalist back at Pride Park represents another boost ahead of the new season. Langas may not have been a regular starter during Norway’s historic campaign, but the experience of training and competing alongside elite international talent could prove invaluable.

With Bobby Clark among Derby’s headline summer arrivals and several other reinforcements strengthening the squad, optimism is growing around the Rams. Langas’ confidence will undoubtedly have been enhanced by his World Cup adventure, and Derby will hope he can translate that experience into consistent performances in the Championship.

As preparations for the new campaign intensify, Langas returns not only as a Derby defender but as part of a Norwegian side that has announced itself on the world stage. And while Sanderson’s cheeky invitation to Haaland is unlikely to become reality, it has certainly added a touch of humour to the defender’s homecoming.
