Newcastle United Lead Race to Sign €45m Italy International Giorgio Scalvini as Defensive Rebuild Accelerates
Newcastle United are reportedly leading the race to sign highly-rated Italian international Giorgio Scalvini as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his defence ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Magpies are expected to prioritise defensive reinforcements this summer after concerns emerged over the age profile of their current centre-back options. Veteran defenders Dan Burn and Fabian Schär are both now 34, prompting Newcastle to identify younger long-term solutions capable of leading the backline for years to come.
According to reports from Italy, Newcastle have emerged as the frontrunners to sign the Atalanta defender, who is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest defensive talents. The Serie A side are believed to value Scalvini at more than €45 million, although the final asking price could depend on Atalanta’s financial situation and transfer activity during the remainder of the window.
Interest from the Premier League in Scalvini is nothing new. Several English clubs have monitored the Italy international over the past few seasons, but Newcastle appear to be making the strongest push as they seek to refresh an ageing defence.
One factor fuelling speculation is Scalvini’s recent change of representation. While a new agent does not automatically signal an imminent transfer, it often precedes discussions over a player’s future, particularly during a busy transfer window. With Atalanta reportedly looking to balance their finances, a significant offer could persuade the Italian club to cash in on one of their most valuable assets.
Scalvini’s impressive performances in Serie A have earned him widespread praise for his composure, intelligence and ability to play out from the back. Despite his young age, he has already established himself as an Italian international and is viewed by many as one of the country’s future defensive leaders.
Newcastle have also been linked with another Serie A defender in recent weeks. Former Chelsea centre-back Fikayo Tomori has reportedly emerged as a more affordable alternative, with AC Milan believed to be willing to consider offers in the region of €20 million as he enters the final year of his contract.
Tomori would bring valuable Premier League experience after progressing through Chelsea’s academy before moving to Italy in 2021. His familiarity with English football and considerably lower transfer fee could make him an attractive option if Newcastle decide against committing more than double the amount required for Scalvini.

However, while Tomori offers immediate experience, Scalvini represents a long-term investment. At just 22, the Italian possesses enormous potential and could become the cornerstone of Newcastle’s defence for the next decade if he continues his current development.
The Magpies have shown in recent transfer windows that they are prepared to invest heavily in elite young talent when the right opportunity arises. Securing Scalvini would fit that strategy perfectly, although competition from other European clubs could still intensify before the transfer window closes.
Whether Newcastle choose the proven experience of Tomori or the exciting potential of Scalvini remains to be seen, but it is increasingly clear that strengthening central defence has become one of the club’s biggest priorities.
Would Giorgio Scalvini be a good signing for Newcastle?
Absolutely. Scalvini combines excellent positioning, composure on the ball, aerial dominance and tactical intelligence, making him an ideal fit for Eddie Howe’s style of football. While the €45 million valuation represents a significant investment, Newcastle would be signing one of Europe’s most promising defenders at an age where his best years are still ahead of him. If the Magpies are planning for sustained success both domestically and in Europe, Scalvini could prove to be a transformative addition to their squad.
