CARLTON MORRIS LATEST AS DERBY COUNTY RECEIVE INJURY UPDATE FROM JOHN EUSTACE

Derby County have been handed a fresh update on Carlton Morris as manager John Eustace revealed that the experienced striker is still some way from returning to full training.

Morris has been unavailable since Derby County’s 2-2 draw with Cardiff City, when the forward was forced to leave the pitch late in the contest after suffering a muscle problem. The injury has subsequently kept him out of Derby’s recent fixtures, leaving Eustace with decisions to make in attack.

For Derby supporters, the absence of Morris is particularly significant.

The striker was one of the club’s most important attacking figures last season after arriving with a reputation for providing goals, physicality and experience at the top end of the pitch. He finished the previous campaign as Derby’s leading scorer and has already opened his account this season, making his current absence an obvious concern.

However, Eustace has made it clear that Derby will not rush their star forward back into action.

When asked about Morris’ progress and whether the striker had returned to training, Eustace admitted that there had been only limited work so far.

“Not really. He’s done a little tiny bit with the physios and what not,” Eustace explained.

The Derby boss then stressed that the club’s priority is making sure Morris is fully ready before he returns.

“I think it’s still probably too early for Carlton as we don’t want to risk him.”

That message will be welcomed by Derby supporters, particularly given the importance of Morris to the team. While fans will naturally want to see their leading scorer back as quickly as possible, rushing a player back from a muscle injury could potentially make the situation worse.

Derby therefore appear willing to take a cautious approach.

The Rams have had to adapt their attacking options during Morris’ absence, but Eustace believes there are still reasons for optimism. The manager pointed specifically to Henrik Meister and Lars as players who can provide alternatives while Morris continues his recovery.

“Henrik came on last night and looked sharp. He also did okay at West Ham,” Eustace said.

“We’ve got Lars who obviously scored against Portsmouth as well, so we’ve got some good options up there.”

That is an important development for Derby.

Morris’ injury could have left the club short of experience and firepower, but the performances of the other forwards have given Eustace more flexibility. Meister, in particular, is beginning to show signs that he can become an important option for the team.

The striker made his debut against West Ham and subsequently impressed Eustace with his contribution. His appearance gives Derby another attacking profile while the club waits for Morris to return.

Yet Morris’ importance to Derby goes beyond simply scoring goals.

The former Luton forward has become an influential senior figure within the dressing room and has played a major role in helping younger or less experienced attackers develop.

One player who has benefited significantly from Morris’ presence is Patrick Agyemang.

Agyemang has made a strong impression since arriving at Derby and has quickly become a popular figure among supporters. His development has also highlighted the value of having an experienced striker like Morris around him.

Morris has been able to offer advice, guidance and encouragement, helping Agyemang understand what is required at the highest level.

Eustace believes that responsibility will continue whenever Morris is back around the squad.

“It’s part of his job as a senior player and every player that we bring in,” the Derby manager said.

“The senior players have got a responsibility to help develop the younger players.”

That leadership role could become just as important as Morris’ goals when he eventually returns.

Eustace added that Morris is still helping Agyemang despite being sidelined.

“Carlton certainly did that with Patrick and he’s still doing that with Patrick. I’m sure it won’t be any different with Henrik.”

The comments underline the respect Derby have for Morris inside the club.

Although he is currently unavailable on the pitch, his influence has not disappeared. His experience continues to be valuable to the younger forwards, particularly players who are adapting to the demands of playing regularly at this level.

For Derby, however, the immediate priority remains his recovery.

The club will be hoping that the muscle problem settles without complications and that Morris can gradually increase his training work before eventually returning to competitive action.

There is currently no suggestion from Eustace that Derby are willing to gamble with the striker’s fitness. His latest comments indicate that Morris has only completed a small amount of work with the physios and is not yet ready to return to full training.

That means supporters may have to remain patient.

Morris’ return could provide Derby with a major boost once he is fully fit. His goalscoring record, physical presence and ability to bring teammates into the game make him a valuable part of Eustace’s plans.

At the same time, Derby have reasons to remain confident in their attacking depth.

Henrik Meister has shown encouraging signs, Lars has already found the net against Portsmouth, and Agyemang continues to develop. Those options should allow Eustace to manage Morris’ absence without putting unnecessary pressure on the injured striker.

For now, though, the message from Pride Park is clear: Carlton Morris is not ready yet.

Derby will continue to monitor his progress, with Eustace determined not to risk making the injury worse by bringing him back prematurely.

The Rams know exactly what they are missing.

Morris was Derby’s top scorer last season, has already scored this campaign and remains one of the senior leaders within the squad. His eventual return could therefore feel almost like a new signing for Eustace’s side.

But until that moment arrives, Derby will have to continue relying on the attacking options available to them.

And while supporters wait for their leading scorer to return, the club’s medical staff will be focused on one thing above all else — making sure Carlton Morris is completely ready before he steps back onto the pitch.
