A commanding centre-back is believed to be high on Lampard’s transfer wishlist, despite Bobby Thomas recently committing his future to the club by signing a new long-term contract.

Coventry City’s search for defensive reinforcements could receive a major boost this summer, with reports suggesting the Sky Blues have been handed the perfect opportunity to sign DR Congo international Axel Tuanzebe on a free transfer once his contract with Burnley expires.

Frank Lampard’s side returned to the Premier League with renewed ambition and have already begun strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign. Following the arrival of Frank Onyeka after his successful loan spell at the Coventry Building Society Arena, attention has now turned to bolstering the defence.

A commanding centre-back is believed to be high on Lampard’s transfer wishlist, despite Bobby Thomas recently committing his future to the club by signing a new long-term contract. Tuanzebe has now emerged as an attractive option, with the experienced defender set to become a free agent.

The 28-year-old is currently representing DR Congo at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he has continued to showcase the qualities that made him one of England’s brightest defensive prospects earlier in his career. Comfortable at both centre-back and right-back, Tuanzebe offers valuable versatility, composure on the ball, and top-level experience gained from spells in the Premier League and European competitions.

For Coventry, the prospect of signing a player of Tuanzebe’s calibre without paying a transfer fee represents excellent business. With the financial demands of Premier League survival requiring smart recruitment, free-agent signings could prove crucial as Lampard builds a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

The Sky Blues know that staying in the Premier League will require greater depth and quality across the pitch. While Onyeka has strengthened the midfield, adding an experienced defender remains one of the club’s priorities before the transfer window closes.

Tuanzebe’s leadership, athleticism, and ability to play multiple defensive roles could make him an ideal fit for Lampard’s system. His experience of handling high-pressure matches would also provide valuable support to Coventry’s existing defensive unit as they prepare for the challenges of England’s top flight.

Although no agreement has yet been reached, Coventry are reportedly well-positioned to make their move once Tuanzebe officially becomes a free agent. With several clubs expected to monitor his situation, the Sky Blues may need to act quickly if they hope to secure one of the summer’s most intriguing bargain signings.

Should the deal materialise, Tuanzebe would become another statement addition for Lampard as Coventry continue assembling a squad determined not only to survive in the Premier League but to establish themselves among England’s elite once again.
